To mark the opening of the photo exhibition Portraits of Displacement, join PhD researcher Juul Kwaks, photographer Jjumba Martin, and moderator Catherina Wilson for a conversation on displacement, everyday life, and the possibilities and challenges of telling these stories through research and photography. Bringing together ethnographic research and documentary photography with South Sudanese and Sudanese refugees living in central Uganda, the discussion explores how people build meaningful lives amid uncertainty through practices of care, home-making, and friendship. Using photographs and personal stories, the speakers will reflect on what different methods can reveal about experiences of displacement, how (visual) storytelling can move beyond stereotypes, and what ethical questions arise when representing people’s intimate lives. Together, the conversation invites the audience to look beyond familiar narratives of crisis and engage with displacement through the lens of home, care, and everyday human connections.
